In Autumn 2011, Margaret and Mark Brammar of Strzelecki Heritage Apples (Gippsland) generously donated their time and expertise to Werribee Park Heritage Orchard.
They identified, or narrowed down the possibilities, of many of our apple varieties. Their conclusions can be downloaded here.
Identification of apple varieties is generally a very difficult and specialised task. Some say it is more of an art than a science.
Some apples are easy to identify, but even the experts cannot always supply a definitive answer.
The only 100% certain test is a DNA analysis, and these are not cheap; at least, not yet.
Books which can help include "The New Book of Apples" by Joan Morgan
or "Apples, a Field Guide" by Michael Clark
Some computer software programs can help with the identification of apples using easily observable characteristics. These can be useful and save a lot of time, but they are not infallible.
