• Fruit: Freestone, very large round fruit with pointed end, skin – red blush on a deep golden yellow to pale green background, flesh – yellow stained with red near the pit
• Taste: Juicy, stringy, firm but tender flesh, sweet to subacid, mild flavour, good quality. Has a thick tough skin that separates easily from flesh
• Uses: Eating, juicing, drying, stewing and preserving
• Background: Elberta was grown by Samuel H. Rumph, Marshallville, Georgia, USA from a seed of Chinese Cling planted in the fall of 1870. Mr. Rumph believed that the Chinese Cling blossom which produced Elberta was fertilized by pollen from Early Crawford. The seedling was named Elberta in honour of Mr. Rumph’s wife, Clara Elberta Rumph. This is the best-known yellow canning peach. Compares with Blackburn Elberta but is smaller and slightly later.
