Background: Originated in Prosser, Washington, USA by Harold W. Fogel at the Irrigated Agriculture Research and Extension Center. Bred from Van x Bing, selected in 1954 and introduced in 1960. Rainier was introduced because it combines the superior bud and wood hardiness of Van with large fruit size in a light-fleshed cherry. The name was derived from Mt. Rainier, a continuous, snow-capped mountain in the Cascade Range in Washington, to connote the “white” flesh of this cultivar. A very popular variety in American and Asian markets
