Description: Spur bearer, large to very large sized long, irregular, oblong shaped fruit. In profile it lives up to its name – sometimes with a little bit of imagination. Very ribbed and five crowned
Skin: Green-yellow but develops red brown flush

Background: Originating in pre 1600’s, possibly from the Severn valley, UK. Known as Katzenkopf in Germany, and in France as Tete du Chat and was one of the first European apples brought to the New World. Named in Parkinson in 1629. Average size tree, very resistant to scab. This is a tart apple that cooks to a firm puree making it ideal for sauces. Also great for stewing and baking
